Design Skills Public&Private
For this brief we were given 9 site locations to choose from on our campus and told to design either a private enclosure or a public space for ourselves.
My design was based on a past-time enjoyed by many people, smoking flavoured tobacco, or Shisha. The concept was to use natural sunlight and the thick aromatic smoke that comes from the shisha smoke to create a warm, relaxing environment where the user can sit back and watch the rays of light interact with the thick smoke.
I tried to enhance the effect by using using wood slats as exterior cladding of the structure. The slats act as sunshades and only allow a very narrow slit of light to penetrate between them creating rays of light in the space which are enhanced by the smoke.
The photo above is a 1:20 scale model of the structure that rests, elevated, in a narrow passage leading from the main courtyard to the Halls of Residence between two 2-story buildings.
